Victory leaves Jets alone in first place

Jaray Mathews hasn't been feeling well lately. Sore throat. Congestion.

Saturday, he also made Arkansas-Fort Smith feel miserable.

Mathews scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Newman defeated visiting Arkansas-Fort Smith 97-84 at Fugate Gymnasium.

"We held him out of practice Friday. He was still feeling badly today (Saturday). It's been hard to get his breath,'' said Newman coach Mark Potter. "He played well against Dallas Baptist on Thursday not feeling well.''

Things started poorly for the Jets on Saturday. Arkansas-Fort Smith jumped to a 5-0 lead.

"I had to call a timeout with 19 minutes left in the first half. All I said was: 'Guys come on.' "

And the Jets (12-4) responded by surging to their fourth straight victory.

And the news got better for Newman after the game _ Incarnate Word lost to St. Mary's, putting Newman alone atop the Heartland Conference standings.

Potter was pleased with many individual efforts.

" (Justin) Berry hit 10 of 12 free throws. He struggled a bit on Thursday, and it's good to see him shoot good at the free-throw line,'' said Potter.

"Keaton (Schultz) was his usual steady self. He was 6 of 8 from the field and 4 of 4 at the line. He's our most consistent player. You know what you are going to get night in and night out with him.''

"Jake (Darby) had a good game. He had seven assists, 15 points and only two turnovers. That's what you need from a point guard,'' said Potter.

Newman goes to Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas, on Thursday and is at Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla., next Saturday.

"Chip (Steven) also had a good game. He had a career-high 19 points on his birthday," Potter said. "He hit a couple of threes that really helped. He also was 4 of 8 from three-point range.''
