Former KU defensive tackle Combs transfers to SE Louisiana

Former KU defensive tackle Marquel Combs, who was granted his official release to transfer last week, is headed to Southeast Louisiana.

Combs, one of the most heralded members of KU’s incoming junior college class, didn’t play during his time at KU, falling off the depth chart after being expected to make an impact on the defensive line.

Combs will be eligible to play immediately at Southeast Louisiana, a program in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision, one rung below the FBS. Southeast Louisiana plays host to Incarnate Word on Saturday.

"We are very excited to have someone of Marquel's talents become a Lion," Southeast Louisiana coach Ron Roberts said Monday in a statement announcing Combs’ transfer. "In addition to his athletic abilities, he's a high-character young man who is going to be an asset to our program on and off the field."

Rated as one of the top junior college players in the country during his sophomore season at Pierce (Calif.) College, Combs picked KU over a list of scholarship offers that also included one from K-State.

After announcing his departure from KU last week, Combs told The Star he wasn’t ready to talk about his next step.

"I'm very thankful to all the people who have given me support and helped with my decision," Combs said Monday in a statement. "I'm grateful to have the opportunity to continue my playing career and studies at Southeastern Louisiana University. I'm excited to be a Lion."
