Monday's sub-state basketball roundup (Feb. 28)

Two of Trey Vargas' 19 points put Wellington ahead for good Monday night as the Crusaders rallied to defeat Mulvane 47-43 in a Class 4A first-round boys basketball game in Wellington.

Levi Gurley (14 points) followed with two free throws, then Taylan Ybarra (10 points) made one for the final margin. Mulvane did not score in the final 90 seconds.

Nolan Smith led Mulvane with 11 points.

Trinity Academy 42, Haven 40 — The Knights survived a first-round scare as Haven missed a game-winning shot at the end.

Austin Kessinger made two Trinity free throws to extend the lead. Teammate Morgan Burns had 15 points to lead the Knights. Ridge Foster had 22 points to lead Haven.

The visiting Vikings took control of a tied game in the third quarter.

Circle 57, Maize South 28 — Jordan Phillips had 14 points to lead Circle to a first-round home victory.

Nick Warren and Kanyon Kinder added 12 points each for Circle, which held Maize South to 11 first-half points.

Collegiate 58, Chaparral 17 — The host Spartans forced 30 Chaparral turnovers and took control with a 21-5 second quarter.

Markus Phox was the only Spartan in double figures with 12 points, but 10 Collegiate players scored and the team shot 48.9 percent from the field, including 6 of 13 from three-point range.

Senior Sean Osler added 14 for Cheney, while Mikabe Erdman ended his Kingman season with 21 points.
