Bad memory puts Heights on attack

With an abundance of success, it's common for Heights boys basketball coach Joe Auer to remember the negative things.

Auer never forgot the 18-2 lead West had the last time it played the Falcons. Neither did his players, he said. Friday's 72-42 win over the Pioneers was the end result.

"They haven't forgot about that and it was important for them to get off to a great start tonight," Auer said. "Our kids have great memories and they don't let disappointment go away very easily. They were disappointed in their performance at West High last time and they had a goal tonight to make a statement early."

Buckets by Evan Wessel and Perry Ellis helped Heights build an 11-0 lead early in the first quarter.

"We wanted to show them that we came to play," Ellis said. "That run was a determining factor and I'm glad we got the win."

Heights continued to build on its lead in the second quarter, going into halftime up 35-16.

"You can't get down on a team like this early," West coach Phil Daignault said. "I don't know if they are 30 points better than we are but they sure proved they were better than us tonight."

Heights never saw its lead drop to less than 16 points in the second half.

"They boys weren't hesitant to attack the basket. They continued to attack and not back down," Auer said. "Any time you get a 30-point win in the City League you've had a great night."

Heights had four players in double figures. Ellis led the Falcons with 25 points. Wessel added 13 points and EJ Dobbins and Terrence Moore had 10 points each.

Daylin Thomas led West with 13 points and Jay Bradley added 11.
