Big win for Kapaun boys over rival Carroll

The Kapaun Mount Carmel boys team picked up a much-needed win over rival Bishop Carroll on Friday night, topping the Eagles 56-45.

Much-needed for a lot of reasons.

"This is my first time beating Carroll in my varsity career," Kapaun's Keaton Lewis said. "It definitely feels great."

Behind a strong defensive effort Kapaun (2-3 overall, 2-3 City League) dominated the Eagles after the first quarter. Carroll led 13-10 heading into the second quarter, but the Crusaders held Carroll (4-1, 4-1) to four points in the second quarter.

"We wanted to set the tone defensively," Kapaun coach Bernie Pearson said. "Offensively, we're not worried. We feel like we can score. We'd been struggling with chemistry, leadership and all those things. It was good to come in here and hard work prevailed."

The Crusaders had all the chemistry they needed on Friday. In the third quarter, Kapaun took over for good with guards Lewis and Michael Martin doing the most damage. Lewis hit a three in the third quarter and Martin tacked on a half-court three at the buzzer.

While Brian Rohleder gave Carroll a lift down low with a double-double — 18 points, 12 rebounds — the Eagles were unable to get much else going in their first loss of the season.

"We've been pretty confident this whole year," Lewis said. "This is just one game and we put it all together. We've been used to getting pressure, we've played West, Heights, East and Northwest. Those are four really quality teams. They pressured us, and I guess, those four teams really prepared us for it."

Martin led the Crusaders with 17 points, and Lewis added 16.
