Grill leaves Maize for Garden Plain

After five seasons and a trip to the Class 6A basketball tournament in March, Maize boys coach Chris Grill has resigned to become Garden Plain's coach.

It might seem like an odd move, going from a 6A school to a 3A school; but for Grill, it's the only move he would have made.

"Really the only job that would even interest me would be in Garden Plain," said Grill, who was 69-41 at Maize and led the Eagles to a 17-6 record last season.

The reasons are strictly about his family. He lives in Garden Plain, right by the high school, and has boys who are 9, 7 and 3.

"I knew someday I would face a tough challenge of either stop coaching for awhile and enjoy watching my kids play or coach them," he said. "And the only way I could (coach them) is if a job opened up, and then I would have an opportunity. Yeah, I'm excited."
