St. Mary's defeats Newman in tourney

Newman's basketball season came to an end Friday night as the Jets lost 74-72 to host St. Mary's in the Heartland Conference tournament in San Antonio.

The score was tied 12 times, and the lead changed hands 20 times.

Jaray Mathews , scored 17 points — 15 in the first half — and grabbed nine rebounds for the Jets (18-10). Chip Steven also finished with 17 points.

Keaton Schultz, whose desperation 40-footer bounced off the backbord at the buzzer, had 12 points, and William Burdette came off the bench to score 10 points.

"Jaray really played well. He's a senior and knew it might be his final game,'' Newman coach Mark Potter said.

"Chip also played well, especially in the second half.''

St. Mary outrebounded Newman 41-30.

"They outrebounded us by 13 in the first half, but our kids adjusted in the second half and outrebounds them by two,'' Potter said.

Asked about the season, Potter said: "We did some great things this season. These kids really put Newman on the basketball map.

"We've got a good nucleus coming back.''
