Newman clinches second in league

With three minutes remaining, Newman's men's basketball team turned to its defense to defeat Texas-Permian Basin 57-54 in Wichita on Saturday.

The victory enables the Jets to finish second in the Heartland Conference and will get a first-round bye in the conference tournament.

"We were up by 14 with 15 minutes left,'' said Newman coach Mark Potter. "Then we went cold. We were back on our heels on defense.''

The result was that Permian Basin tied it at 51 with three minutes to play.

"We called time-out. I told the players to go to our trapping defense," Potter said. "It had worked well in the first half, and we had gotten away from it in the second half.''

The move paid dividends as the Jets created turnovers in three of the next four possessions by Permian Basin.

The biggest defensive play of the night came with the Jets leading by one and Permain Basin having the ball. Keaton Schultz blocked a shot by Justin Bailey, and Chip Steven got the ball and was fouled.

Steven made two free throws with 3.9 seconds remaining to cinch the victory.

William Burdette, who came off the bench to lead the Jets in scoring with 15, hit two crucial baskets in the final two minutes.

Newman shot 57.7 percent (15-26) from the field in the first half, then fell to 33.3 (7-21) in the second half, including 0 for 7 from three-point range.
