Dallas Baptist thumps Newman

A crippled Newman team suffered its worst Heartland Conference loss of the season Saturday, dropping an 88-69 decision to host Dallas Baptist.

Chip Steven, who injured an ankle in Thursday night’s game, did not play Saturday.

Jaray Mathews, the conference’s leading rebounder, played and got seven rebounds as he continues to come back after a knee injury.

“Jaray is getting stronger, but he’s playing tentative now. He’s 80-85 percent healthy now,’’ said Newman coach Mark Potter.

Keaton Schultz led Newman in scoring with 15.

“They were all over Keaton, with Jaray playing hurt and Chip not playing. We had trouble taking care of the ball (20 turnovers); and that, combined with not shooting well (38.6 percent), was our downfall.

“We hope Chip will be able to go next week.

“If we win our two games next week, we can still get second place and the bye that goes with it,’’ Potter said.

The top two finishers get byes in the tourney which begins March 4 at St. Mary’s in San Antonio.
