Mathews, Newman beat St. Mary's

Jaray Mathews scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace Newman to a 68-60 Heartland Conference victory over St. Mary's in San Antonio on Monday night.

"Jaray stayed out of foul trouble tonight and played well,'' Newman coach Mark Potter said.

Four other Jets scored in double figures — William Burdette had 12, Chip Steven had 11 and Keaton Schultz had 10.

"Burdette's toughness made a big difference for us tonight,'' Potter said.

"He became eligible at Christmas but missed the Cameron game. He adds a toughness for us that we need.''

Newman took a one-point halftime lead but took control early in the second half. Back-to-back three-pointers by Chip Steven enabled the Jets to take an eight-point lead at the 16-minute mark, and they never lost the lead again.

"Our interior defense was a big reason we won,'' Potter said. "Schultz, Mathews, (Justin) Berry and (Tommy) Brumbelow played good defense for us tonight.''

Potter was quick to point out that his Jets outrebounded St. Mary's by two (34-32).

"St. Mary's has been outrebounding teams by 12 this season," he said.

Newman improves to 3-1 in conference play and 9-4 overall.
