Newman wins again

Justin Berry scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to spark Newman to a 71-57 Heartland Conference victory over Texas A&M International on Saturday in Wichita.

The victory boosts Newman to 2-0 and atop the Heartland Conference and is its fifth straight. The Jets have won six of their last seven games.

"We didn't shoot the three well at all, but we hit our free throws,'' Newman coach Mark Potter said.

The Jets hit 18 of 23 at the free-throw line, making them 38 of 48 in the last two games. However, the Jets were 3 of 19 on three-pointers.

"One of the key factors in our win was our bench play,'' said Potter. "Terrell Northington played his best game for us. He made good decisions and some big plays for us.

"In fact, this is the best bench we've had in a long time. (William) Burdette came off the bench and played well. This is his second game for us. He had to sit out because of some tranfer issues with his grades, but he's ready now.''

Burdette scored eight points, hitting 4 of 5 shots.

Newman will return on Dec. 30 at Lawton, Okla., against Cameron. On Jan. 2, the Jets play at Incarnate Word in San Antonio and on Jan. 4, will face St. Mary's, also at San Antonio.
