Newman gets win at home

Newman went on a 14-3 run to wipe out a three-point halftime deficit, then held off St. Edward's 76-72 on Thursday night in Wichita in the Heartland Conference opener for both teams.

"We made our free throws down the stretch, and that was crucial,'' said Newman coach Mark Potter.

Newman trailed 33-30 at halftime but surged to a 44-36 lead with 16:27 remaining.

"However, they came right back at us, and we couldn't put them away,'' Potter said.

Keaton Schultz hit a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining to give the Jets their final four-point lead. Terrell Northington also hit a pair of clutch free throws with 15 seconds to give Newman a 73-70 edge.

The Jets hit 4 of 5 from the line in the final 1:30 and were 20 of 25 for the game.

Jaray Mathews had a double-double for Newman, 11 points and 11 rebounds.

"Jaray blocked six shots, and that was a key factor in our win,'' said Potter.

Jake Darby and Chip Steven each scored 12 points for the Jets, and Justin Berry had 11.

Newman will play host to Texas A&M International on Saturday in another conference game.
