KSU women surge by BYU

A comeback in each half by Kansas State on Friday night pushed the Wildcats to their second win of the season, a 65-62 decision over Brigham Young in Provo, Utah.

A pair of Brittany Chambers free throws with 13.6 seconds remaining gave K-State a three-point lead 65-62.

Kansas State (2-3) was led by senior Ashley Sweat with 18 points, while freshman Taelor Karr scored a career-high 17 points and Chambers added 16 off the bench.

BYU (3-2) opened a 16-9 lead in the first 10 minutes, using seven points from guard Haley Hall.

The Cougars extended the lead to 22-14 with 7:50 to play in the half, but the Wildcats used a 16-5 run to capture a 30-27 halftime advantage. The Wildcats' run was sparked by forcing seven BYU turnovers and holding the Cougars to 2-of-9 shooting for the final 7:50 of the half. The Wildcats also did not allow BYU to attempt a free throw in the opening half.

K-State's comeback was boosted by 14 first-half points from Karr and seven apiece from Sweat and Chambers. The Wildcats shot .458 from the field in the opening half and .500 from beyond the three-point line.

The Cougars sprinted to an 11-2 run to open the second half, capped by a Hall three-pointer with 17:04 to play, forcing the Wildcats into an early timeout. After trailing 40-35 at the first official timeout of the second half, K-State used an 11-6 run to earn a 46-46 tie with 11:46 to play.

Following K-State's run, BYU and the Wildcats exchanged the lead six times over the next four minutes. A jump shot by Kari Kincaid gave K-State a 52-51 lead with 7:45 to play, a lead the Wildcats would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

The Wildcats shot 46.9 percent from the field, including 52.6 from three-point range(10 of 19). The 10 three-pointers were the most since Jan. 3 against Central Arkansas.

Kansas State will conclude its three-game road trip on Wednesday at Arkansas. The Wildcats return to Manhattan to host the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic on Dec. 4-5.
