Xavier hands KU first loss of season

FREEPORT, Bahamas — Amber Harris scored 22 points and had nine rebounds to help No. 9 Xavier beat No. 18 Kansas 76-71 on Thursday at the Junkanoo Jam.

The loss is Kansas' first of the season after three straight victories.

Xavier (4-0) led 72-67 with 50 seconds left after Harris made two free throws. Kansas then hit four straight from the foul line to make it 72-71 with 27 seconds remaining.

Harris then made two more free throws; and after a defensive stop, Special Jennings sealed the win from the foul line. She finished with 17 points. Ta'Shia Phillips added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Danielle McCray led Kansas with 23 points.

Trailing by five late in the first half, Xavier rallied to take a 38-37 lead at the break. The Musketeers extended the advantage to 52-42 as they started the second half with a 14-5 spurt.

Kansas rallied behind McCray, who hit consecutive three-pointers, to cut the deficit to 68-66 with 3:20 left.

Kansas will play the TCU-Minnesota loser on Saturday.
