The solemnity and decorum of a graduation ceremony were lost when Americans stopped seeing college as a sacrifice for the love of the arts and sciences and started viewing it as a necessary socioeconomic process whereby the raw material (students) is made into market-ready goods (workers).
You want to talk about graduation etiquette to kids who think it’s fine to send nude pictures of themselves on their cellphones? Who won’t turn off those phones at church, weddings or funerals? Who have no concept of a handwritten “thank you” note? Good luck.

If all the minority and middle-class people in the United States didn’t spend 1 cent or more for one week, what would the economy of the U.S. look like?
The Kansas Legislature can’t pass a budget and I blame Obama.
Do not pay our 165 state legislators any money past the 90 days, as they already are overpaid and underworked.
If Kansas legislators really want to cut expenses, they should receive no pay for their days in extended session, and all living and office expenses should come out of their own pockets.
Hire a nonpartisan statistician to draw the redistricting maps. We are the only state that can’t get it done.
Looks like we need to have the repealer undo the legislation condemning Agenda 21 and Shariah law.

Does anyone care about the horrible impact that huge, hissing, belching, roaring, soot-spewing buses have on the neighborhoods they invade? Wichita needs smaller buses running fewer hours, for the sake of the majority’s peace and quiet.
So a $500,000 shortfall in the bus system budget justifies a $14 million tax increase? What math wizard thinks that will fly?
When we lived in Italy, a small windshield sticker was required to park downtown. The sticker tax subsidized the bus system. It worked to reduce core area traffic, as well as pay for the buses.
While I think a sales tax to support what I believe are industrious bus riders would be beneficial, I cringe at the Orwellian term “dedicated funding source” to describe what is simply a tax.
