Gov. Sam Brownback is joining Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., as a member of Donald Trump’s agriculture advisory committee. So what will Brownback’s advice be? The importance of crop insurance, exports and ethanol, Brownback told the Salina Journal. He said the ability to finance a crop depends on crop insurance, which “has a substantial federal subsidy to it.” He also said that because agriculture is an export industry, it is harmed if the dollar is too highly valued. He also thinks the government needs to maintain support for biofuels and ethanol. “If we didn’t have ethanol in this country now,” Brownback said, “we would be importing a lot more oil, and the price of corn might be half of what it is now.” – Phillip Brownlee
