Family and friends of the victims of the Carr brothers are making a passionate call to remove four of the five Kansas Supreme Court justices up for retention in November, arguing that the justices showed “blatant disregard” for the impact of their decisions in death penalty cases. But a survey of judges and attorneys in Kansas is recommending the four justices be retained, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported. The nonpartisan Kansas Judicial Evaluation Committee released performance assessments showing that at least 74 percent of lawyers and 75 percent of judges “strongly” recommend retention of Justices Lawton Nuss, Marla Luckert, Carol Beier and Dan Biles. Only 39 percent of lawyers and 54 percent of judges indicated a strong preference that Justice Caleb Stegall be retained. – Phillip Brownlee
