It’s now official. President Obama signed a food-labeling bill championed by Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita, and Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan. The new law creates a national labeling standard for genetically modified foods, thus preventing a state-by-state patchwork of laws that would drive up costs. Though some consumer groups object that the labeling requirement doesn’t go far enough, Pompeo said in a statement this week that “this new law is a clear victory for Kansas farmers, our agricultural community, and everyone who wants to provide safe and affordable food.” – Phillip Brownlee
