Some GOP leaders accuse the Kansas Supreme Court of being political in scheduling oral arguments on the adequacy of school funding for Sept. 21, just seven weeks before five justices are up for retention on the Nov. 8 ballot. But the court also held fall hearings in advance of late-winter rulings about school finance on Aug. 30, 2004, on Oct. 8, 2013, and on Nov. 6, 2015. The 2004 hearing fell between primary and general elections (when four justices were on the ballot). It’s also telling that Republican critics of the court apparently think news coverage of the hearing would favor the justices. – Rhonda Holman
