Rep. John Whitmer, R-Wichita, wants the upcoming special legislative session focused tightly on fixing inequities in school funding – as it should be. And he is threatening to bring up a bill affecting transgender students’ bathroom use if Democrats “muck us up.” But it’s his Republican colleagues whom Whitmer should be concerned about, not Democrats. Gov. Sam Brownback opened the door to including other issues in the school-funding fix in order to attract GOP votes. Senate Vice President Jeff King, R-Independence, has already proposed a constitutional amendment. As Whitmer said, lawmakers need to “make sure the schools stay open and be done.” – Phillip Brownlee
