What is the mission of the Benghazi committee?

Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita, a member of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, said in a press statement that he was hopeful the release last week of more e-mails by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would “finally give us the answers we need about the surrounding events that led to the tragic death of four Americans in Benghazi.” He also said that he and other GOP committee members remain “committed to the mission we have been given: to do all that we can to obtain the truth about the events surrounding this tragic event and to share all of the facts with the families of the deceased and with the American people.” But others contend that the committee’s real mission is to damage Clinton, who likely will be the Democratic presidential nominee. “The true Benghazi scandal is not what happened on the Libyan coast, but the use of a congressional committee for political purposes,” Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen wrote this week. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., even boasted on Fox News this week that the committee had driven down Clinton’s poll numbers. – Phillip Brownlee
