Event addresses infant-mortality disparity

Though there has been progress in recent years in reducing the state’s infant mortality rate among African-Americans, it is still one of the highest rates in the nation. In 2015, the infant-mortality rate for blacks in Kansas was 10.43 per 1,000 live births – more than twice the white rate of 4.7, according to the most recent report from the Kansas Department of Health Environment. A “Show Your Love” event Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Chester Lewis Academy, 1847 N. Chautauqua, is seeking to raise awareness about this disparity and promote health and wellness. It can be one more step in helping reduce the number of heartbreaking tragedies for Kansas families. – Phillip Brownlee
