Kansas education officials are leery of President-elect Donald Trump’s choice as U.S. secretary of education, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported. Billionaire Betsy DeVos – whose confirmation hearing is Tuesday – has no experience working in public education, and neither she nor her children attended public schools. Instead, her primary connection to education has been promoting school choice and vouchers. “I can’t see her doing anything good for public education,” said Kansas State Board of Education member Ann Mah. Kansas Education Commissioner Randy Watson noted that states that have gone heavily into charter schools and choice have seen mixed results. But State BOE Chairman Jim Porter said he wasn’t prejudging DeVos. “We’ve heard a lot of stuff but that’s all it is: speculation,” he said, adding that “we need to work together to solve problems.” – Phillip Brownlee
