There is a tremendous amount of misinformation being given about the Common Core state standards. These standards do not represent a federal government takeover of our state education system. These standards are based in research, and their formation was led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers.
The Common Core standards set the framework for educators that is rigorous, focused and coherent, but the implementation will still depend on each individual state and the educators within the state. The standards are only the what; the how will be determined by the state and school districts.
Some opponents of the standards say that we have had excellent standards in the past, and our kids have done well so we don’t need new ones. They also argue that if we continue with our old standards, teachers won’t need further training and we won’t need to purchase new textbooks.
Let’s continue this logic to other areas. Since our state doesn’t want to keep up with the latest research and information, my doctor, dentist and optometrist wouldn’t need more training or to upgrade their equipment, because what was used for my parents and grandparents was good enough.

I ask everyone who has not looked at the Common Core standards to visit www.corestandards.org and read them. Decide for yourself, not based on hearsay, whether these standards are rigorous enough. Determine for yourself what the standards are actually saying. Discover that these standards require kids to be critical thinkers and problem solvers.
