As it gained a new boss this week, Intrust Bank Arena got another good monthly report card, furthering hopes that the community's honeymoon with the venue might last.
The six events in May brought another $397,600 in net income, for a total $1.6 million (and 288,000 attendees) since the arena opened Jan. 9. One surprise was the modest size of the crowd — 3,000 — who paid to hear GOP star Sarah Palin speak May 2 at a fundraiser for the Bethel Life School Association of Wichita.
Meanwhile, with his Kansas roots and SMG experience, new general manager A.J. Boleski sounds like an arena professional and an apt choice to manage the facility as of July 26. "He comes with a passion for this industry and a real desire to work with us here in this community to make the Intrust Bank Arena become all it can be," said Assistant Sedgwick County Manager Ron Holt.
