Folks in the mood for a snowball fight on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day in the Wichita area may have to settle for a game of touch football instead.

Mostly sunny skies with highs in the low 50s are projected for both days in Wichita, forecasters say. Winds will be light and variable.

Showers move into the area early Saturday morning, forecasters say, with thunderstorms possible later in the day. Highs will drop to the more seasonal mid-40s.

Winds will pick up as the storms arrive, shifting to the north and gusting to more than 30 miles an hour at times. As colder air arrives, the precipitation on Sunday will change to sleet and snow.

The wintry precipitation is expected to make travel challenging through much of the state on Sunday, weather officials say. Snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected to persist in the Wichita metropolitan area through Monday.
