Wichita, Topeka, Kansas City in elevated tornado risk zone

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center has projected a 5 percent chance of tornadoes for a large segment of eastern Kansas and a sliver of western Missouri that includes Wichita, Kansas City and Topeka.

That may not sound like much, but weather officials are still urging residents to pay attention to conditions later today and seek shelter if severe weather threatens.

The primary threats with the storms are large hail and strong winds, but a statement issued by the Storm Prediction Center cautions “a couple tornadoes may occur.”
