Wichita can look forward to a pleasant spring weekend before thunderstorms return to the area early next week, forecasters say.

Highs will be in the mid-70s  today and the low 80s Saturday and Sunday under sunny skies. Winds will be light out of the south today, forecasters say, before becoming gusty this weekend.

Gusts could approach 30 miles an hour on Saturday and exceed that figure on Sunday.

Thunderstorms next week could be severe, forecasters say, so residents would be wise to monitor conditions and outlooks closely.

Persistent heavy rains Tuesday night and early Wednesday were eerily reminiscent of the storms that spawned a killer flash flood on Labor Day weekend in 2003, weather officials say.
