Heavy rain prompts flood warning for Sedgwick, Sumner counties

A flood warning has been issued for portions of southern Sedgwick County and northern Sumner County until late Saturday night.

The warning, which is in effect until 8:45 p.m., extends from just south of Haysville to the north edge of Belle Plaine and from just east of Clearwater nearly to the Butler County line.

Mulvane and the southern part of Derby are included in the warning area, but forecasters say urban settings should be spared from flooding.

Minor lowland flooding is expected in rural areas after an estimated two inches of rain fell in a short time. The storms that blossomed and strengthened just south of Wichita were virtually stationary.

“If this had been over the city, we’d definitely be having some (street) flooding,” said Robb Lawson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wichita.
