Body found in rural Reno County identified as Sterling woman

Officials identified Tuesday the body of a missing woman who was found in rural Reno County on Monday.

The body of Katie Nicole Salmans, 23, was found in a wheat field about three miles southwest of Nickerson.

Salmans, of Sterling in neighboring Rice County, was reported as a missing person to the Hutchinson Police Department on Feb. 22. Law enforcement authorities had been working the case since then, according to an e-mail from Capt. Steve Lutz, Reno County Sheriff’s Office.

Salmans may have been driving a vehicle that was found wrecked in the area of 56th and Centennial Road on Feb. 7, according to the e-mail. Temperatures that night were in the low 30s, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.

A wrecked truck was found in a ditch with minor damage to the front end and no occupants around it. The wrecked pickup was found a half- to 3/4-mile away from where Salmans’ body was found.

The Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center identified Salmans’ body. The cause of death has yet to be determined pending toxicology results, which typically take several weeks to process.
