Saline County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot man after he pointed gun at them, sheriff says

Brock Nichols, 35, died within hours of being shot by Saline County sheriff’s deputies about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in his home at 2388 E. Kansas Highway 4, Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said during a briefing Wednesday morning.

Two deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, he said.

Deputies had been called Tuesday night by the mother of Nichols’ 18-month-old son, who wanted them to check on the child. The mother was concerned that Nichols, who was caring for the child, had been drinking.

While the deputies were in his home, Nichols entered a dark bedroom. He turned from the bedroom and had a semi-automatic handgun, which he pointed at deputies, who shot at him. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the shooting.
