A water emergency was declared early Sunday for the town of Caney, in southeastern Kansas.
According to a Facebook message posted by the Caney Police Department, the city’s water treatment plant recently experienced a critical failure of its raw water pump system.
As of 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, according to the post, about 300,000 gallons of drinkable water were available. Under the emergency, all utility customers are directed to use as little water as possible, according to a news release from the city.
Residents were being asked to refrain from washing vehicles or watering lawns.
Located in Montgomery County near the Oklahoma state line, Caney is about two hours southeast of Wichita.
