Before the days of Sarah Palin, this Kansan had the distinction of being Alaska’s governor – twice.

He served as Alaska’s second and eighth governor.

His first term as Alaska’s governor was from 1966 to 1069. It ended when he resigned to be confirmed as Secretary of the Interior.

He later served as governor from 1990 to 1994.

He was born in Ellinwood and moved to Alaska in 1940. He made his living through a construction company he formed.

As a politician, he championed Alaska’s statehood.

When he died in 2010, he was buried as he requested – standing up.
