Former Wichita mayor Bob Knight is not going to run for mayor this year.
Knight, 73, previously expressed interest in running again.
It’s been nearly 12 years since Knight was mayor. He was the first Wichita mayor elected by a popular vote and was elected to five terms between 1980 and 2003.
“I’ve had a commitment to my wife over the last 30 years that I wouldn’t run for public office without her wanting me to and she doesn’t want me to,” he said.

“So I’m going to honor our agreement. She supported it seven or eight times.”
After leaving office, Knight worked as a private consultant and took a year off for major surgery.
He also cited health issues in recent years as another reason for not running again.
“(My wife) just wants me to be around a little longer. One of the few, I might add,” he joked.
Mayor Carl Brewer cannot run again after serving two terms. A host of other mayoral candidates have emerged. The deadline to file for local elections is Jan. 27.
The local primary is March 3 and the general election is April 6.
