Wichita hires new housing director

Wichita has hired a new housing and community services director.

John Hall will start Jan. 25, according to a news release. He succeeds Mary Kay Vaughn, who retired in October.

He is currently the deputy director of the Office of Asset Management and Portfolio Oversight for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Washington, which provides program administration for federally insured and assisted projects.

Previously, he worked as director of the Department of Housing and Community Development with the Government of the District of Columbia. He has also been the field office director for HUD in Washington and Richmond, Va.

Hall has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in public administration from Syracuse University. He will receive an annual salary of $145,000.

The city’s housing department has more than 80 employees and a nearly $24 million budget. It works with other agencies and groups to promote affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization and other services using federal funds.

It also helps residents with rental assistance vouchers, exterior rehabilitation grants and loans, and safe housing for the chronically homeless, according to the release.
