Officials are trying to determine what caused a fire that destroyed a four-story New Jersey apartment building, displacing hundreds of people.
The fire continues to smolder Thursday.
Edgewater Fire Chief Tom Jacobson says the fire appears to have started on the first floor of The Avalon at Edgewater. He says flames quickly spread through the floors and walls of the wood structure along the Hudson River across from Manhattan.
Firefighters had to rescue residents when they arrived Wednesday and no one is missing. But the flames devoured 240 units.
Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland says approximately 500 residents were permanently displaced and approximately 520 were temporarily displaced from surrounding buildings.
Two civilians and two firefighters sustained minor injuries.
The fire chief says sprinklers were working and that the building complied with construction codes.
