A 9-month-old northwest Missouri boy died Monday after apparently being accidentally shot in the head by his 5-year-old brother.
Doctors at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City pronounced the boy dead just before noon, said Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White.
Emergency personnel received a 911 call at 8:58 a.m. from the boys’ mother in Elmo, Mo. Elmo is a little more than 100 miles north of Kansas City near the Iowa border.

The 5-year-old had found a loaded .22-caliber handgun in the house and apparently was handling it when it fired, White said.
A bullet struck the 9-month-old, who was in a playpen, White said. The child was flown to Children’s Mercy.
Investigators believe the shooting to be an accident, White said.
“We don’t have any reason to believe otherwise,” he said.
