Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.
For recent You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.
The record: Individual contributors to federal campaigns, such as the recent presidential election.
Why you'd want them: To learn more about who supported which candidates.
Where you get the records: From the Federal Election Commission's Web site, www.fec.gov. Click on "Campaign Finance Reports and Data" from the menu on the left and then on the "Search the Disclosure Database" link. You may search by individual contributor, but you also may search by candidate, committee and by office.
How much it will cost: The information is free.
