Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives. For recent You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.
The record: Inmate information from the Sedgwick County Jail. The offender search is a relatively new feature on the county's Web site.
Why you'd want it: To see if someone you know is in jail. You can search by name. If you want a list of everyone who is in jail, leave the name fields blank and hit "Search."
Where you get the record: From the county's Web site, www.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriff /. From the "Online Searches" menu on the right, click on "Current Jail Inmate Search."
How much it will cost: The information is free.
