Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.
For recent You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.
The record: Presidential and congressional campaign finance reports by candidate and state.
Why you'd want them: To learn more about who Kansans are supporting. Contributions are broken down by gifts by individuals, political action committees, parties and candidates.
Where you get the records: The Federal Election Commission's Web site, www.fec.gov. You can click on the presidential election and on the House and Senate elections.
How much it will cost: The information is free.
