Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

The record: A list of federal disaster declarations issued so far this year.

Why you'd want it: To learn more about disasters across the country and how the federal government has responded. As of Friday, the government had declared 31 disasters.

Where you get the records: From the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Web site, Click on the "Disaster Declarations" link. You can search by year going back to 1953 or by state.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
