Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help citizens keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.
For recent You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.
The record: Annual crime statistics for your area.
Why you'd want them: To learn more about crime occurring in your neighborhood.
Where you get the records: From the Wichita Police Department's Web site, www.wichita.gov. Go to the Police Department's link from the menu on the left, then to "Field Services." Click the police patrol area for your neighborhood (such as patrol north, south, east and west.) Then you can further narrow your search by clicking on the beat zone in which you live. How much it will cost: The information is free.
