Wichita State will play Emporia State on Nov. 9 (an afternoon game) to open the regular season. Details of the contract are in the works, according to senior associate athletic director Darron Boatright.
The bigger issue is the CBE Classic, which is looking for a school to replace Canisius. WSU will play Buffalo in CBE and needs another opponent.
Boatright says the contract with the CBE guarantees WSU four games against NCAA Division I opponents (in 2009, it stuck WSU with a Division II school). WSU can withdraw without penalty should the CBE not meet that requirement. In late August, that seems highly unlikely and Boatright wouldn’t address the odds of that move.“We’re counting on them to honor the terms of their contract and deliver us four Division I games,” he said. “If not, we have to evaluate what our options are.”The CBE planned on Canisius filling a spot, according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman. Canisius opted for the Preseason NIT.
On the MVC front, associate commissioner Jack Watkins says the conference portion will go to schools today for release early next week.
