Any urban community that expects to grow needs someplace to put its construction and demolition waste. But it's hard to see the Sedgwick County Commission deciding to approve rezoning for a C&D landfill at 55th Street South and Ridge Road, given that every landowner within 1,000 feet of the property has signed the protest petition. Besides the usual complaints about reduced property values, noise and traffic, the proposal has sparked some site-specific concerns, including the potential to cause groundwater contamination and bird strikes at nearby Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. The Metropolitan Area Planning Commission and planning staff gave the landfill their blessing. But because of the neighbor opposition, it would take 4 of 5 county commissioners to make it happen, and the current commission is not prone to ignoring property owners' will.
