MVC summer basketball update

Bradley

Guard Sam Maniscalco, injured most of last season, transferred to Illinois and will be immediately eligible. He was one of the MVC’s best players and it’s doubly painful to see him play for the Illini. Bradley also lost guard Remy Abell, who switched his commitment to Indiana after coach Jim Les departed.Forward Taylor Brown resumed workouts earlier this month. If he can return, it’s a big lift for the Braves. However, center Will Egolf is again sidelined with a knee injury.Games against Wisconsin and Michigan highlight the schedule for new coach Geno Ford.

Creighton

Sophomore Doug McDermott survived the first round of cuts for the U.S. under-19 national team. One more reason to like the Bluejays as the MVC favorite – Gonzaga transfer Grant Gibbs.

Drake

Lots of new coaches and staffers at Drake, including Stan Johnson, former Arkansas assistant Brett Nelson and Kansan Ryan Wedel.

Evansville

Coach Marty Simmons added four freshmen.

Illinois State

The Redbirds will play in Canada in August. They have two transfers and three freshmen learning a new system.

Indiana State

Gonzaga transfer Manny Arop will be eligible at ISU in 2012-13.

Missouri State

Kyle Weems could have transferred without penalty. He elected to stay at MSU.New coach Paul Lusk says there is a chance Will Creekmore could get another year of eligibility.

Northern Iowa

The Panthers are headed to Padre.

Southern Illinois

Center Gene Teague, one of the Valley’s best big men (when healthy, in shape and motivated), transfers to Seton Hall.Senior guard Justin Bocot got an early start on the season with a trip to China. An ankle injury hindered Bocot much of 2010-11, but he regained his zip late in the season and he could be ready for a strong senior season. The Salukis won’t play in the MVC-MWC Challenge for one good reason – a road game.

Wichita State

Coach Gregg Marshall is building his roster throughout the summer. Transfer guard Malcolm Armstead is a hedge against graduation losses in 2012. WSU remains in the market for a big man, with Andre Walker (formerly of Vanderbilt) visiting later this month. Most fans won’t get a look at guard Ron Baker until 2012-13. He may be worth the wait.
