The track of the Haysville-Wichita tornado of May 3, 1999

Here’s a map showing the path of the killer tornado that struck 12 years ago, courtesy of the National Weather Service.

“We took a direct hit to the middle of town,” Tim Norton, then Haysville’s mayor, told me recently about that tornado.

Where the 1991 tornado hit a residential area, the May 3 tornado tore through Haysville’s business district.

“That tornado left a huge scar” in the center of the town, said Carol Nugent, who has worked for the city since 1983. “We still have vacant spots because of it.”

The tornado destroyed almost all of the historic structures in the city, she said.

“You don’t ever get that back,” Nugent said, “but we’ve tried.”
