Watching Shockers in Hutchinson

Wichita State basketball coaches make the most of the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson. Last March, they found current Shocker Joe Ragland and got their first look at Carl Hall, who signed in November. In 2008, they checked out Reggie Chamberlain from Seward County on his way to the All-Tournament team as a freshman.

This season is no different. The team we know WSU coaches will pay attention to is the Midland (Texas) Community College Chaparrals. The Chaps, the 2007 champions, play Chattanooga (Tenn.) State at 10 a.m., Tuesday. Former Shocker Matt Braeuer, a member of the coaching staff last season at WSU, is an assistant coach at Midland. WSU is recruiting one of the Chaps, Guy Landry – a 6-foot-5 sophomore swingman from France. Landry profiles as a do-everything guy who can defend in the lane and on the perimeter.

So if you’re looking for a reason to escape to Hutch, be there for the opener.
