At least one tornado touched down briefly near the Oklahoma border in Cowley County on Sunday, and there may have been more.
“I’m not sure yet,” said Chance Hayes, warning coordination meteorologist for the Wichita branch of the National Weather Service. “I’m still sorting that out.”
The Storm Prediction Center logged two tornado reports in Kansas – one five miles southeast of Maple City in Cowley County and the other two miles northwest of Elgin in Chautauqua County.
They were reported at about the same time, next to the Oklahoma border. Given how far apart Maple City and Elgin are, I doubt they were the same tornado reported from different vantage points.
