Coaches on the road

Wichita State coach Gregg MarshallWichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall is making it look easy to win on the road in the MVC. Of course, winning on the road is the hardest thing to do. Even mediocre teams win most of their home games. Even bad teams are going to win a few.

Should WSU win at Evansville on Tuesday, Marshall will know the feeling of walking out of every MVC venue – usually into a cold winter wind with snow on his shoes – with a win. Roberts Stadium is the last hurdle for a guy who won at Omaha and Carbondale – places that shut out three of the previous four Shocker coaches.

WSU joined the MVC in 1945-46, far enough back that Washington (Mo.) and Oklahoma A&M were members. Since then, the MVC has undergone at least four major transformations and 12 Shocker coaches traveled an expanse from Las Cruces, N.M. to Detroit playing MVC games.

Eddie Fogler (1986-89) and Gene Smithson (1978-86) are the only two to win in every MVC city. Take into account all the changes in membership. For example, Harry Miller coached against Memphis State for two seasons as an MVC member before the Tigers left and one season against Creighton and Indiana State when they became members of the MVC in 1977.
