It's good that the city of Wichita and Sedgwick County are working to settle a lawsuit about unpaid jail fees. And the possibility of exchanging land instead of money could be a win-win: A tight city budget wouldn't have to come up with cash, and the county might get property that it could use for a work-release center or other needed purpose. City Council member Jeff Longwell expressed some concern about exchanging property that may have temporarily dropped in value with the down economy. "This all comes out of the same taxpayer pockets," he said. But as a recent Eagle editorial noted, that's also why city and county leaders need to settle this lawsuit and spare taxpayers the insult of seeing two local taxing authorities spend tax dollars going to trial over a disputed debt of tax dollars.
